Xiahou Xuan

The Romance of the Three Kingdoms

Xiahou Xuan is a member of the extended Cao clan whose brief but consequential role shows how Sima Yi’s consolidation of power turned kinship with the ruling house into a source of danger. After Xiahou Xuan is identified as a possible threat, his uncle Xiahou Ba defects to Shu Han; later, Xiahou Xuan joins Emperor Cao Fang’s attempt to rally loyalists against the Sima brothers, a plot exposed and punished with the destruction of its participants and their families.

Identity and Political Position

The account identifies Xiahou Xuan as a member of the extended Cao clan and as a distinguished warrior. His uncle is Xiahou Ba, who has crossed into Shu Han and entered its service. Those family ties place Xiahou Xuan in a vulnerable position as Sima Yi assumes greater authority in Wei: his connection to the Cao house makes him a possible rival, while his uncle’s defection gives that suspicion an immediate political context.

Sima Yi’s Consolidation and Xiahou Ba’s Defection

After Cao Fang appoints Sima Yi prime minister and Sima Yi’s two sons receive high positions, Sima Yi realizes that Xiahou Xuan is among the Cao clan members he has not eliminated and may pose a threat. He summons Xiahou Xuan to court. The summons has a consequence beyond Xiahou Xuan himself: it prompts Xiahou Ba to revolt, cross the border with three thousand men, and offer his services to Shu Han’s second ruler.

Jiang Wei is initially doubtful about accepting Xiahou Ba, but agrees after hearing what is happening in Wei. Xiahou Ba argues that Sima Yi has enough to occupy him in securing power at home to make an invasion of Shu unlikely. His defection thus links Xiahou Xuan’s precarious standing at court to a wider shift in allegiance between the rival states, although the account does not describe Xiahou Xuan taking part in that military episode.

The Plot Against the Sima Brothers

Later, after Cao Fang has been sidelined and left with only three officers, Xiahou Xuan joins Zhang Qi and Li Feng in a conspiracy with the emperor. Their plan is to summon loyal men to the emperor’s aid and overthrow both Sima brothers. To seal the appeal, Cao Fang removes his dragon-phoenix shirt and writes the edict in blood, recalling that Dong Cheng had been killed by Cao Cao after a similar conspiracy was discovered. The comparison makes the danger plain to the conspirators, though they dismiss it on the ground that Cao Cao had been far more intelligent than Sima Shi.

The plot is exposed almost immediately. After the men leave the palace, Sima Shi stops them by the roadside and asks why their visit took so long. They claim they were studying the Classics with the emperor, but Sima Shi is not deceived. He discovers the blood-written shirt, and the three men and their entire clans are executed. The episode ends Xiahou Xuan’s political role in the narrative: his attempt to help restore the emperor’s authority fails, and his fate is bound to the wider purge that secures the Sima brothers’ control.
